Frequently Asked Questions

Hydrotherapy

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy utilises the properties of water in the comfortable environment of a heated pool, designed by a suitably qualified physiotherapist specifically for an individual to maximise function, which can benefit you physically, physiologically, or psychologically.

Would Hydrotherapy help my condition?

Hydrotherapy provides a suitable environment for treating chronic and acute conditions. The water temperature assists with muscle relaxation and the pressure from the water on your body will have a soothing effect for painful conditions and help with decreasing blood pressure. The buoyancy will make you feel lighter while in the water and this makes movement and exercise easier, especially if you have pain and difficulty with weight bearing activities, such as walking.

Will I be working with my therapist "one on one"?

Your session will be a one-on-one session with one of our chartered physiotherapists.

Clients will have a physiotherapist who can show them and guide them how to do a range of exercises that will help their specified condition.

What should I wear to my hydrotherapy session?

A bathing suit or any swim wear that will allow you to move comfortably inside the water will suit for Hydrotherapy sessions, additionally you can wear pool socks/ swim shoes which help you move and grip on both wet and dry surfaces to protect your feet and prevent any slips and any other mishaps.

What if I am incontinent?

For clients who are incontinent, we suggest speaking to your therapist for more information.

Do I need to be able to swim?

It is not necessary to know how to swim to participate in Hydrotherapy.

What can I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit will last approximately 45 min and will include an assessment with your physiotherapist that will last approximately 15min in which you will be reviewed about your medical history and diagnosis. After the assessment the physiotherapist will tailor a specified treatment plan for you, based on your goals. And the remaining 30 minutes will be spent in the pool.

How long is a typical hydrotherapy appointment?

Most appointments will last 40 minutes.

Physiotherapy

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a combination of different treatment modalities such as manual therapy and exercise prescription to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient's mobility, function, and well-being. Physiotherapy helps through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention, and health and fitness.

Do I need a GP referral to be treated?

You do not need a GP referral; you can come directly to Kiltipper Woods physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy Clinic without a GP or consultant referral. You can feel safe in the knowledge that we maintain excellent communication with consultants, GPs and other health professionals throughout the country. This allows our treatment to be multi-disciplinary and often more effective when a comprehensive injury assessment is made.

What can I expect to happen at my appointment?

Your first visit will consist of the physiotherapist’s initial assessment, in which you will be asked some general questions and detailed medical history will be taken to establish the cause of your problem, to identify if there are contributing factors from your history or lifestyle. A comprehensive physical examination will then be carried out to determine the most appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan accordingly with your goals.

You can expect to go home informed about your condition and have a well-tailored exercise program suited for you to perform at home, or in the gym, to complement your treatment at the clinic. There will be plenty of opportunity to discuss what is happening with your injury and to ask any questions. We are here to help you return to your full activities and achieve your goals.

What should I wear to my physiotherapy consultation?

This will depend on the type of treatment you are receiving; we recommend loose, comfortable clothing that will not restrict movement. A pair of shorts is recommended for lower limb treatments. For scoliosis patients, please wear undergarment that shows your spine. Feel free to ring the clinic to confirm the required dress before your appointment.

How many sessions will I require?

Each condition presents in a unique way – it's personal to the individual. Your physiotherapist will assess you and give you an idea of how many sessions you may need on your first visit, but there are several factors to consider.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Please bring any referral letters and relevant test results such as x-rays, MRI scans etc. (If you have been referred)

How long will my physiotherapy appointment take?

45 minutes for an initial physiotherapy session. And every Follow up treatment is 30 minutes.

Our physiotherapists may prolong your session accordingly to your condition.

Does private health insurance cover my treatment?

You may get a rebate if you have physiotherapy cover or extras cover with your Health Insurance provider. This will depend on your policy, so please check with your provider. You may also be entitled to a tax-back rebate via Revenue's Form MED 1. At the end of your treatment, you can ask us to issue you a full receipt presenting the list of sessions you had with us so you can present it to your insurance company.

"I have been attending Physiotherapy here since March 2021. Due to an acquired brain injury, I needed Physiotherapy to help restore functional ability to my limbs. The physiotherapy I have received here has helped me to regain strength and build muscle. Excellent Physiotherapists!"

- Lynda (37)

"I have been using the hydrotherapy pool here for a number of years. The staff are fantastic, and the facilities are excellent."

- Ciara (24)

"I have been under the excellent care of Ms. Sarah Carroll at Kiltipper Woods for a few months now. I had been suffering with acute arthritis in both knees and walking and movement was almost impossible. The hydrotherapy treatment has transformed me in just a few weeks and the encouragement and drive of Sarah has improved my condition so much that I am walking so much better now. I was able to walk my daughter up the aisle at her wedding last week unaided, a feat that seemed impossible only weeks before. I recommend the superb professional treatment of the Kiltipper Woods Practice to everyone."

- Pat (84)

"My name is Patrick, and I was diagnosed with Primary Progressive MS nine years ago when I was sixty years of age. Up to a year ago I managed to maintain a reasonable level of mobility through regular physiotherapy and an exercise regime. In December 2021, I contracted Covid pneumonia and was confined to a hospital bed for three weeks. On my discharge from hospital, I could just walk a short distance with the help of a Zimmer frame. My physiotherapist recommended that I should go to Kiltipper Woods for Hydrotherapy treatment. Over the following three months I attended Kiltipper twice a week for Hydrotherapy treatment. In May of this year, I joined my family who were walking stages of the Camino in Spain. I managed to walk 5KM each day , admittedly on some of the easy stretches. The remarkable improvement in my mobility is entirely due to the wonderful physiotherapy team in Kiltipper. I look forward to my weekly Hydrotherapy treatment and engaging with the friendly and caring staff in Kiltipper."

- Patrick (69)
